News Media Canada is pleased to share a new ‘Newspapers by the Numbers’ fact-sheet with members.

This fact sheet provides straightforward visualizations of national and provincial newspaper data. One important data point reflects that six out of ten Canadians trust editorial content in newspapers (print/digital). Half of Canadians trust the printed advertisements in newspapers.

We encourage members to make use of these statistics with advertisers and other stakeholders. If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Levson, News Media Canada’s director of marketing and research at: klevson@newsmediacanada.ca.

The Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) shared some good news with their members late last week: the province’s environment minister promised an EPR exemption for newspapers distributed in the province.

A delegation of AWNA officials, including past president Evan Jamison, president Lisa Sygutek and executive director Dennis Merrell, met with minister Rebecca Schulz last September to brief her on EPR’s impact on community newspapers.

Schulz sent a follow-up letter to Evan Jamison this week, letting us know that she intends to exempt Alberta-produced newspapers from EPR financial obligations, which “may include future amendments to the EPR Regulation.” Newspapers are a successful recycling product and serve an important societal function. I hear your concerns about how EPR could negatively affect your members and understand newspapers face many challenges, including revenue, online platforms, inflationary pressures, and lack of a solid digital-only model to provide general news in most Alberta communities. I also appreciate the efforts of Alberta’s newspaper industry to support positive environmental outcomes by light-weighting paper and printing only the number of pages and copies needed for each edition,” the Minister added. She advised that the Environment ministry will continue collaborating with its partners to make certain Alberta’s new EPR system is well designed. Other provinces, including Ontario, have also exempted newspapers from their EPR programs. Some other provinces, such as B.C. and Saskatchewan, have yet to grant exemptions to newspapers. Industry levies could reach as high as $4 million this year in B.C. alone.

The Canadian Journalism Foundation’s (CJF) Lifetime Achievement Award this year goes to Phillip Crawley in recognition of his inspiring leadership and for his commitment to journalistic excellence and business success in Canada.

During his 25-year tenure as CEO and publisher of The Globe and Mail, Crawley steered the publication to new heights of excellence. Under his leadership, The Globe became synonymous with groundbreaking journalism, investigative reporting and fearless coverage of critical issues shaping the nation and the world, winning a record eight Governor General’s Michener Awards. During the same time period, The Globe won dozens of National Newspaper Awards and the CJF’s Jackman Award for Excellence in Journalism six times, more than any other newsroom.

CJF Board Chair Kathy English, who chaired the Lifetime Achievement Award jury, enumerates the many reasons Crawley was chosen: “His inspiring leadership, steadfast stewardship and outstanding successes guided Canada’s national newspaper — and our nation’s news wire service — through one of the most turbulent eras in global media. His commitment to journalistic excellence and business success in Canada is simply unrivaled.”

Crawley will be honoured at the CJF Awards ceremony on June 12 at the Royal York Hotel.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Crawley has left an indelible mark on the landscape of Canadian media through his dedication, vision and unwavering commitment to journalistic integrity.

Arriving in Canada from the northeast of England in 1998, Crawley brought experience in competitive markets to the task of guiding The Globe through a high-stakes media environment and to steering the publication through its readers’ migration to online news. Under his stewardship, the paper embraced the online environment, finding innovative ways to serve its community of readers.

Crawley’s influence on Canadian journalism extended beyond The Globe to the Canadian Press, where he served as chairman of the board of directors from 2007 to 2009, then as co-chair from 2010 until 2023.

Beyond the newsroom, Crawley has made numerous contributions to the broader media landscape. As a member of various governing bodies, including the Board of Directors of the Royal Society of Canada, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of Canadian media and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

The annual report on advertising expenditures by the government of Canada for the 2022-2023 fiscal year was released last month, detailing spending on media planning, placement, and creative production.

Total spending was $86.1 million in 2022/2023, down significantly from the year before ($140.8 million). The majority of this spending ($67.3 million) was placed through the Agency of Record (AOR), with the balance placed by department heads for campaigns less than $25,000.

  • Digital advertising was more than double that of traditional media, a considerable change from 2021/2022.
  • Print advertising (including daily/community newspapers and magazines) was less than $1 million for the year, down from $6.5 million the previous year (down to 1% of the total ad spend and 5% of the traditional media spend).
  • Social media spending (Facebook/Instagram, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Twitter, TikTok, Pinterest, Reddit) accounted for over $13 million.

Cameron Stolz, a local businessman and former Prince George city councillor, took ownership of the Prince George Citizen last week.

Stolz purchased the publication from Glacier Media and vowed to ensure the newspaper remains a community watchdog.

“In a world where social media seems to trend of different stories that are based not on truth or on fact but on supposition and guesses and wild erroneous comments, I think it’s important that there is actual fact-based journalism that’s done and that’s an important role the Citizen has played in our community for over 108 years,” he said.

For 34 years, Stolz has owned Great White Toys, Comics and Games. He’s also a partner in local contracting painting business, IC Expert Painting.

“It really provides a great opportunity going forward, local ownership is exactly what a paper like the Prince George Citizen needs at this time in the evolution of our industry,” said Peter Kvarnstrom, Glacier Media’s president of community media.

Village Media announced earlier this week has added FlamboroughToday.com to its growing roster of news sites in Ontario.

FlamboroughToday is Village Media’s 23rd owned-and-operated local news outlet in the province.

“We are thrilled to be in Flamborough, a district of Hamilton where people care deeply about the news and events happening around them,” says Jeff Elgie, the CEO of Village Media. “We have an amazing team in place and we’re looking forward to showing local residents why they should turn to us first for breaking news and deeper coverage of their community.”

The editor ofFlamboroughToday is Brenda Jefferies, an award-winning journalist and lifelong resident of Waterdown who covered local news for 17 years at the now-shuttered Flamborough Review. Joining her on the team is Cara Nickerson, a talented reporter who started her career at Hamilton Community News and most recently worked as a reporter, writer and producer at CBC.
